2015 Colnago CX Zero Alu 105
Aluminum frames are a gift to both designers and riders. The material is light, strong, and fairly easy to manipulate. It’s easy to mirror many design features found on carbon bikes and deliver them for a fraction of what carbon costs. This is why Colnago designed their CX Zero Alu 105 bike. It shares a fork, geometry and design highlights of the WorldTour-ridden CX Zero, but at an incredible price.
The geometry is something Colnago is rightly proud of. They were amongst the first companies to develop a frame for Paris-Roubaix, and have evolved the design as their knowledge has grown with feedback from top riders. The geometry is designed to give you a smooth, stable ride over rough roads. It also works to give you a smooth, stable ride wherever you go. As their knowledge base increased, they also learned how to further use the frame tubes to advance the ride quality. The swooping chain stays and skinny seat stays work to absorb vibrations and bumps, their rear end working hard to save yours. They also made sure to keep tire clearance generous, 28mm tires should fit, so that your rolling rubber can aid in the suspension and efficiency of the ride.
Even with the aluminum, they’ve kept many of the design features of the carbon bike. There’s a BB86 bottom bracket, which helps with both weight and stiffness. There’s Colnago’s proprietary headset, where the tapered steerer runs on bearings pressed into removable cups. And a carbon fork.
To keep the bike accessible, Colnago employs both Shimano 105 5800 for the drivetrain, and a bevy of house-brand parts. 105 is always a great choice, it’s Dura-Ace’s price-savvy brother. You get many of the same features, including a wide-range eleven-speed 11-28 cassette. A 50/34 compact up front gives you plenty of gears for every situation.
As befitting a bike made for long, hard riding, the bike comes with a durable wheelset that Colnago put together with hubs from Formula and rims for Alex. Not flashy, but they’ll still be spinning true thousands of miles into their life, with thousands more to go. Keeping the rider in mike, they specify 25mm wide Conti’ Ultra Sport II tires, which are designed for year-‘round durability.
The Colnago CX Zero Alu 105 shows what innovation and ingenuity can do to the bottom line
